ex.plore: Culverhouse CG & make the most of your summer garden

Summer is coming, is your garden ready? Whether you garden at home or in a community garden, explore some options to make the most of your summer, and hopefully minimize your summer sweat. We'll share tips on 'lasagna' gardening, composting, cover cropping, solarizing or covering, and options for summer crops, too! Some of these options can be especially useful if you are starting out or expanding your garden and wanting to improve your soil on a budget. So whether you are here in summer- or away for a few months- you may learn an approach that meets your summer garden goals- whether its improving your soil, reducing nematodes, expanding your garden space, or growing food for your table. Instructors: * Mindy Hanak Community and School Garden Coordinator, Sarasota County UF/IFAS Extension * Randy Penn, Waste Reducation Agent, UF/IFAS Sarasota County Extension Location is Culverhouse Community Garden located inside Culverhouse Nature Park. There is limited parking so carpool if you can, or bike to the location using the legacy trail. If using GPS please ask for driving directions to "Culverhouse Nature Park" be mindful of pedestrians/cyclists as you pull into the park and veer left at the fork to find the garden. We will meet just outside the garden gate promptly at 10am so we can welcome everyone together as the gate autolocks. Time: 10am to 11:30am. Our goal is to end any instruction/demonstration by 11am and allow the extra time for questions and folks wanting to explore the garden. This is an outdoor learning opportunity to see some examples in the garden. Dress comfortably for being outside- appropriate footwear for paths that are grass or mulched. There may be 'bugs' like mosquitos or fire ants, and weather will be warming so please bring water and wear sunscreen and/or repellant if needed. Cost: Free Advance registration is required.
