I'll walk you through this unique process for creating a highly functional and beautiful piece of handpainted pottery. We'll be using a buff clay with lots of grog that gives our finished pieces a rustic intuitive beauty, perfect as a background for our drawings in colored clay slips. I'll be firing your pieces for you, first to bisque temperature, and applying a clear matte glaze, and then to stoneware Cone 6 - so the earthiness remains. Your pieces will be durable, dishwasher-safe, food-safe and microwave-safe. I have 30 years of working with clay and mixed-media, mostly in the context of sculpture and installation, including a BFA in Arts and Crafts from UGA and an MFA from University of Washington's storied Ceramics program. My work has always delved into our intimacy with nature and desire, and my pottery line caries that forward into the intimate spaces of those who welcome pieces into their lives. My designs often come to me, I like to think, from the Cosmic Mother, speaking to me when I meditate and journey in nature. While I welcome beginners, you might find it best to have some experience with clay to take this class. Total beginners might find it challenging. You can take one of my other clay classes to get a little experience, like Little Bowls or Nature Plates .
