When he was 16 years old, his family moved to Los Angeles and he quickly became known as a natural jazz improviser on valve and slide trombones. He went on to play with Bob Cooper, Pete Christlieb, Don Menza, Maynard Ferguson, Conte Condoli, Shorty Rogers, Jack Sheldon, Peter Erskine, Peter Donald, Tom Kubis, Dick Berk, Andy Simpkins, Frank Strazzeri, the Kim Richmond Big Band (Japan tour) and Frank Gambale. Since moving back to New York, Mike has performed with Michael Brecker, David Liebman, Alan Broadbent, Jerry Bergonzi, and a number of big bands, including Mike Abene, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Bill Mobley, Andrew Hill, Tom Harrell, and Kenny Wheeler. Currently Mike has been leading groups that pay tribute to the music of Bob Brookmeyer and Jimmy Giuffre. You can buy tickets for this private event! Some of the proceeds to go to Jazz Foundation.
