THE DAVID ARNAY QUARTET

Live jazz performance by David Arnay Quartet, with proceeds benefiting World Central Kitchen

David began his career in Ithaca, New York after attending Ithaca College in the late 1970s. In that enlightened upstate environment he got involved in the vibrant local music scene, eventually joining the popular eclectic Zobo Funn Band featuring guitar wizard David Torn. After moving to Pasadena in the late 1980s, Arnay soon became connected in the Los Angeles jazz world. A significant mentor in Los Angeles was woodwind artist Bennie Maupin, the famed Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock sideman. “Collaborating with Bennie has been perhaps the most inspirational chapter of my musical life.” Working with Maupin opened doors for collaborations with other A-list L.A. jazz players including tenor saxophonist Bob Sheppard, bassist Dave Carpenter and drummer Peter Erskine. All four appeared on Arnay’s first recording as a leader and composer, Daddy’s Groove. His follow-up, Blues…and Then Some, was a trio project with drummer Dave Tull and bassist Larry Steen. Arnay's most recent release “8” is an ambitious project evolving from solo piano on the first track to an octet closer. Currently a full-time senior lecturer for the USC/Thornton School of Music Jazz Studies department, David began his career as an educator for the University in 1999 after completing has USC master's degree. He works extensively with students from outside the jazz degree, bringing players based in the classical discipline into the world of improvisation. As a performer David remains active on the local scene, including a 35+ year residence at Pasadena’s famous Parkway Grill supper club. You can buy tickets for this private event! Some of the proceeds will go to World Central Kitchen.
